About Me

Hi, I’m Dilay 😄

Introduction

  • My name is Dilay; it’s a Turkish-Persian name that means “as bright as the moon” and “the moon that brightens your heart”. My middle name, Fidan, means “sapling” in the Turkish language.

  • I’m a French national of Turkish descent, born in Brive in 2001. I lived there for 3 years, before my family eventually moved to Paris; I ended up growing up in the French capital, while going back to my country of origin once a year. I then moved out to London in September 2019 for my undergraduate studies.

Studies

  • I’m currently an undergraduate student at UCL (in my third year), studying an Integrated Master of Science in Psychology and Language Sciences, which is an interdisciplinary degree at the intersection of the following areas: psychology, linguistics, neuroscience & maths/statistics (with R).

  • Prior to entering university, I obtained a French Scientific Baccalaurate (2019) with a speciality in Further Maths (Mention Très Bien: 19.31/20); note that this was the pre-reform Baccalaureate (with core subjects being Maths & Further Maths, Physics & Chemistry, and Life & Earth Sciences).

Overarching research interests

  • I’m interested in neuroscience, especially its computational and cognitive subfields, and artificial intelligence (ML, DL, RL & CV). What excites me the most is the application of computational tools and machine learning/deep learning techniques to research in neuroscience and cognitive science, which is exactly what I aspire to pursue after my undergraduate studies.

  • In terms of research domains, I’m most inspired by research investigating human/artificial learning and decision-making “in the wild and on-line”; multimodal sensory integration in interactional environments also fascinates me since such lower-level perceptual abilities (that we all effortlessly and constantly make use of) constitute the foundations for higher-level abilities that we’d typically point to when thinking about human cognition.
